# AI concierge vs live chat

Live chat connects a website visitor to a person, which means it is only as available as that person is: outside working hours it becomes a contact form with extra steps. An [AI concierge](https://askmywebsiteai.com/what-is-an-ai-concierge) answers immediately, at any hour, in whatever language the visitor writes in, using the website's own content - but it cannot read a frustrated customer's tone and decide to make an exception. The two are not substitutes. The concierge absorbs the repetitive majority of questions so that the humans are free for the ones that actually need a human.

## What live chat is genuinely better at

It is worth being blunt about this, because a page that pretends otherwise is not useful to anyone deciding between them.

- **Empathy and repair.** When something has gone wrong - a late delivery, a double charge, a bad experience - the visitor does not primarily need information. They need to be heard by someone who can say "I'm sorry, let me fix that." No assistant does that credibly.
- **Judgment and exceptions.** Deciding whether to waive a fee, extend a return window, or bend a policy for a good customer is a business decision. It requires authority, not knowledge.
- **Genuinely complex edge cases.** Anything that requires combining several systems, checking an internal record, or reasoning about a situation nobody wrote down. A person can go and find out. An assistant grounded in the published content cannot.
- **Relationship and sales nuance.** High-value B2B conversations, negotiation, reading hesitation and choosing when to push. That is a human craft.
- **Accountability.** A promise made by a named person carries weight that a widget's sentence does not.

## What the AI concierge is better at

- **Availability.** Most website traffic does not arrive between nine and five in your time zone. Every question asked at 23:40 on a Sunday is either answered by an assistant or postponed, and postponed usually means lost.
- **Speed.** There is no queue and no "an agent will be with you shortly". Visitors abandon queues.
- **Language.** The assistant replies in the language the visitor writes in, regardless of the site's language. Hiring for that coverage is not realistic for most businesses.
- **Consistency.** The same question gets the same grounded answer at any hour, from content you control, without depending on which agent is on shift or how recently they were briefed.
- **Page awareness and guidance.** An agent in a chat window is describing your interface from memory. The concierge reads the visible text of the page the visitor is on and highlights the exact element to click, step by step, across pages - which is faster to follow than "click the blue button under the second heading, it should be there".
- **Volume without headcount.** A traffic spike does not create a two-hour backlog.

## The repetitive majority

Anyone who has staffed a support inbox knows the shape of it: a small set of questions asked over and over, and a long tail of hard ones. Shipping times. Whether you deliver to that country. What the return window is. Where the invoice download lives. Whether this plan includes that feature. These questions are already answered on the site, and they are still asked, because finding an answer inside a site takes more effort than typing the question.

That is the work an AI concierge is built to take. The answer exists in your own pages; the assistant is scanned into them when the site is set up, and the owner can add notes for anything the pages do not say out loud. It answers only from that material, never from the open internet, so it does not improvise policies you never wrote.

What is left over is the part live chat was always good at. Escalation stops being a fallback and becomes a filter: fewer conversations, each one worth a person's time.

## Cost behaves differently, too

Live chat costs are dominated by people. That is not a criticism - it is why live chat is good - but it means the cost of answering the hundredth "do you ship to Portugal?" is the same as the cost of answering the first, and coverage outside office hours multiplies it.

AskMyWebsite AI is priced on the principle **pay for answers, not tokens**. One answer means one visitor question answered, and the guidance continuations that follow an answer are free, so walking someone through a five-step flow is not five charges. When an account reaches its cap the failure mode is quiet, not broken: visitors in the middle of a conversation finish their thread, and for new visitors the widget simply does not appear. Your site never shows an error message.

AskMyWebsite AI is in private beta and we are onboarding a few websites at a time. Tell us your website address and what you would want the concierge to do, through the [contact page](https://askmywebsiteai.com/contact), and we will come back to you with access and pricing.

## Running both

The sensible arrangement for most sites is both, with the concierge in front. It answers instantly and, where the visitor's goal is an action rather than a fact, guides them to it on the page. Anything emotional, exceptional or genuinely complicated goes to a person - who now arrives at a conversation that has already been narrowed down instead of starting from "hi, how can I help?".

The concierge is also honest about its limits by construction. It answers from your content and the notes you add, and where that content has nothing to say, saying so is the correct behaviour rather than a failure. That is exactly the moment to hand over.

## Practical notes

- Installation is one script tag before `</body>`. No plugin, no changes to your site's code. It works on WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Squarespace, Wix, Framer, custom HTML and single-page applications, where it detects client-side route changes.
- The assistant never clicks, fills or submits anything. It highlights the element; the visitor decides. Form input values are never read.
- Privacy: EU operator (Spain), EU hosting (Barcelona), a GDPR Article 28 DPA at [/dpa](https://askmywebsiteai.com/dpa), no cookies set by the widget (sessionStorage only after the visitor opens it, and it dies with the tab), conversations auto-deleted after 90 days, payments only on Stripe hosted pages, and your content is not used to train AI models.

## Try it before you decide

Put it on a page you know well and ask it the five questions your inbox gets every week.
